What Happens During an Elevator Emergency Call?

An elevator emergency phone is not simply a convenience installed inside the cab.

Most people step into an elevator without giving the emergency phone a second thought. The button is there, usually marked HELP, PHONE, or with a telephone symbol, but unless something goes wrong, there is little reason to think about what happens after it is pressed.

For a property owner or manager, understanding that process is important. An elevator emergency phone is not simply a convenience installed inside the cab. It is part of a life-safety communication system designed to give a passenger a dependable way to reach assistance when an elevator stops unexpectedly, someone experiences a medical emergency, or another situation requires help.

Several things need to happen correctly between pressing that button and speaking with someone who can respond.

It Starts With the Passenger

Imagine that an elevator stops between floors with a passenger inside. The passenger presses the emergency communication button.

Reliability Matters Because There Is No Good Time for a Failure

An office telephone that stops working is inconvenient. An elevator emergency phone that doesn’t work can become a life-safety problem.

Consider when an elevator phone is most likely to be needed. There may already be an equipment malfunction. Building power may have been interrupted. A passenger may be frightened, injured, elderly, or unable to determine where the elevator has stopped.

This is exactly the wrong moment to discover that the telephone line was disconnected months ago.

Emergency communication reliability needs to be considered as a complete system. The phone itself can be perfectly functional while the service behind it has failed. Likewise, a working communication line does little good if the elevator phone has been programmed incorrectly or has defective equipment.

Traditional Copper, VoIP and Cellular Service

For many years, copper telephone service was the natural choice for elevator communications. It was widely available, relatively simple, and compatible with the analog equipment installed in buildings throughout California.

The telecommunications environment has changed considerably.

Telephone carriers have been modernizing their networks and retiring portions of legacy copper infrastructure. At the same time, traditional phone-line costs can represent a significant recurring expense for properties maintaining multiple elevators or other emergency communication devices.

Some properties consider conventional VoIP service as an alternative. VoIP can be an excellent technology for everyday business communications, but elevator applications deserve additional scrutiny. A typical VoIP connection can depend on internet connectivity, networking equipment, local power, configuration, and other components that may introduce additional points of failure. An inspector should not be the first person in months to press the emergency button.

These are all situations where an elevator can continue operating normally even though something behind the scenes has changed.
